Enabling Hydrogen Solutions

For Fuel Cell Power, Combined Heat and Power, Transportation, and Industrial Gas Applications

Hy9’s proprietary hydrogen purification products provide high purity hydrogen on demand for fuel cell power, combined heat and power, transportation and industrial gas applications.  Our core differentiation is our unique and field proven hydrogen purification technology, refined over many years of development and commercial deployment.  Our cost effective membrane systems separate pure hydrogen from a wide variety of gas mixtures, providing a reliable solid barrier to any impurities. The attributes of Hy9’s industrial gas purifiers include:

Purity – Hy9’s purifiers produce hydrogen with purity of 99.9999+% or higher

Fuel Flexibility - Hy9’s membrane purifiers tolerate a wide variety of feed stocks and gas mixtures, having been successfully deployed with systems utilizing methanol, natural gas, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas, ammonia borane, and a variety of hydrides.

Flux Capacity – Hy9’s purifiers meet customer generation requirements from as little 300 cc’s per minute up to hundreds of liters per minute, depending on customers’ specific requirements

Modularity - Hy9 can increase output capacity by simply adding more membranes in utilizing a plate and frame technology (stacking). Therefore, in comparison to legacy technologies that are physically constrained from scaling down, Hy9 provides compelling economic and operational products for portable applications (100W-1000W) to on-site industrial generators (2000scfh).

Temperature – Hy9’s purifiers are designed to operate optimally in the temperature range from 300°C to 350°C

Pressure – Hy9’s purifiers operate with inlet pressures from 50 psig to 250 psig depending specific requirements

Durability – Hy9’s purifiers are designed to operate over long periods of time without any degradation in output or performance

Heating – Hy9’s purifiers include integrated heating element to achieve and maintain temperature requirements

The HPS purifiers reliable performance, compelling capabilities and low cost has been proven in the field over ten years with over 1,000 purifiers in continual use at customers’ facilities, accumulating more than approximately 3 million hours of field operation.

The economics of our systems are very compelling for our customers, especially at smaller flow rates, due to the design and approach to manufacturing. The membrane in Hy9’s membrane purifiers is a planar palladium alloy metal membrane that separates hydrogen from hydrogen containing gas mixtures by permeation of hydrogen. Hy9’s method for producing thin palladium alloy membranes has improved the hydrogen productivity per unit of palladium contained in such membranes by a factor of 50 or more compared to the conventional palladium membranes. Exploiting this method is essential for widespread commercialization of economical purifiers and membrane reactors.

Over the last ten years HPS purifiers have had a cumulative run time over 3 million hours under thousands of cycles without requiring any purging, and can even withstand reverse pressurizations. We are now leveraging these invaluable years of commercial experiences and a decade of R&D to uniquely position Hy9 to provide enabling solutions to industrial hydrogen users/suppliers and fuel cell companies.

Custom Designs - Hy9 also offers larger purifier systems for applications that are designed to meet the requirements of larger applications. For further product information, please email us the list of specifications of your application to Product Inquiries

Common Misperceptions of Palladium Membranes

Hy9 uses a planar technology (foil) that requires several fold less palladium compared to conventionally-used palladium tubular structures, many of which utilize a palladium/silver alloy. Thus the total cost of palladium in our membrane purifiers/reformers is relatively minimal relative to the total cost of each unit. In addition, Hy9 uses another palladium alloy that includes a support structure which can withstand back pressurization and does not require a nitrogen purge system should the power be turned off.

Another common misconception is that palladium foils are not durable. Hy9 has sold over 1,000 purifiers that have a cumulative run time of some 3 million hours under thousands of cycles and can even withstand reverse pressurizations.

Hy9’s fifteen years of development and commercial sales have enabled the company to develop and sell proprietary, enabling, economic, high purity/reforming hydrogen solutions for small, medium and larger scale applications.
